Meditation House
Wangsapung Loei

Meditation House is located in Wangsapung, Loei province. The property situated in a rich forest environment with a creek that flows to the southern portion of the site and nice views of surrounding mountains. The inner end of the site has been selected to use as a meditation house because of its quiet and private settings. Because of the land slops down into the creek and waterfall, the houses are in descending order so that each building can capture view of the creek. The horizontal dimension of the building façade perpendicular to the incoming southern wind direction. The narrow dimensions of the house are facing east and west to prevent solar heat from sunlight. The main entrances are located north of the building, closed to the parking spaces

The project is a collection of 3 one-story houses in a managed compound. The layout of each house location is designed to capture the best view, providing proper ventilation and privacy. The living room looks directly onto the creek where a curving line leads the viewer’s eyes to the distant mountain, and the dining room capture the views of the creek and mountains in the back.

The design concept is using horizontal lines to indicate a sense of simplicity, motionless rest and peace. The lines are parallel to the creek beneath the site. A 12 meter path for the walking meditation looks like a bridge on the slope, which refers to the path of practice Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha as the way to guide one’s path – the peace that comes from walking through the natural surroundings of the bridge.

The orientation of the three houses is designed to allow a void space between them in order to prevent noise disturbances for meditation practitioners. The indoor spaces are clear and simple, including foldable bed for bedroom, pantry, dining room, bathroom and washing area

The houses use raw concrete to harmonize with the surrounding nature environment and glass windows to capture views. Concrete roof slab with overhanging eaves is designed to protect sunlight and rain and to create a simple and peaceful horizontal line. The houses elevated to prevent moisture from the ground and to allow natural drainage, which is a common issue when building in forests. Each house has waterlily in water basins attached to the poles to prevent outdoor ants and insects enters the house.

The material used in the building is selected based on the environment in the context of the location and easy to maintain. Raw concrete wall texture is suitable for presenting natural environment of the site. Woods are partially used to provide a natural feeling when touched. Old hardwoods are used at the meditation pathway to prevent termites and wood expansion and contraction. Construction materials are emphasize on truth characteristic of the materials (truth-to-material), such as polished concrete to represent natural texture and to prevent common paint problem when exposed to excessively high humidity and moisture in the surrounding tropical forests.
